The Differences Between Mint and Peppermint That You Don't Know About

The Differences Between Mint and Peppermint That You Don’t Know About

Recently, an old friend of mine wrote me a long message on Facebook.

Hey Erki! I thought I’d share my experience with you. When you visited last winter and gifted me your farm-grown peppermint tea, I didn’t mention that I don’t really like peppermint at all. 😊 But life is probably like that – when something you don’t like keeps coming your way, it means you probably need it.

Anyway, I was happy, and of course, I kept the tea bags. They’re great for offering to guests. I know your teas are of great quality and organic too – you put your heart into the tea business.

Last year on Mother’s Day, my sister and relatives visited, and we remembered our mom. She was always cheerful, warm, and smiling. I can’t remember her ever being angry or yelling. Everyone loved her. I remembered that mom loved peppermint tea, so I put both of your peppermint teas on the table – Spearmint and Peppermint. While carrying the teapot to the table, I already noticed that I was starting to like the scent coming from one of the pots. Since that day, Spearmint has been my daily companion. I’ve never been much of a tea fan, but this Spearmint is so lovely and smooth, and I feel like it even reduces my appetite – I’ve lost about 5 kg over the year.“

    A little bit more

And you know, I’m somehow happier and calmer now. Just like mom was. Maybe mom was so chill and cheerful because of the peppermint tea? 😊 Anyway, I recently read on your website that peppermint tea has even stronger properties and can help alleviate respiratory illnesses.

I’m now thinking that maybe I should try Peppermint as well. Like taking medicine – you might not like it, but if it helps, it makes sense to take it. If I mix it with Spearmint, the result should be milder, and maybe I’ll even like it. 😊

If you want, Erki, you can share my story – maybe it will help someone. In addition to losing weight, my health has also improved, and there are probably many others like me who reject something good out of ignorance. Anyway, big thanks to you, my friend, for the peppermint tea and best of luck with your tea farming!

Why Didn’t He Like Peppermint Tea, but Liked Spearmint?

My friend’s message touched me, and I thought that his experience might really help someone. Most people don’t know that there is a big difference between different types of mint.

Mint teas are valued worldwide for their numerous health benefits. There are hundreds of mint varieties, each with its own flavor nuances and benefits!

Ly’s Garden has chosen to cultivate two of the best ones – Spearmint and Peppermint.

So, let’s take a closer look at how Spearmint  and Peppermint differ.

    Spearmint (Mentha spicata)

Spearmint is much softer and sweeter in taste than peppermint, and that’s precisely because it does not contain menthol. Menthol is a beneficial, powerful substance, which is why peppermint tea is so effective. But just as some people cannot tolerate raspberries, menthol may also not be suitable for everyone.

And this is where Ly’s Garden Spearmint comes in handy! This mild and naturally sweet, menthol-free mint tea often appeals to those who don’t like peppermint tea at all. Many tea lovers mix peppermint tea with sweet mint to create a medium-strength, milder mint tea with a fair amount of effect but a softer taste.

The mint variety in Ly’s Garden Spearmint tea bags is apple mint, as it is known in the vernacular, or spearmint in English. In fact, the difference between sweet mint tea and peppermint tea is like the difference between gums. Spearmint gum is sweet and mild, while peppermint is strong and makes your mouth tingle. If you know which gum you like, you know which tea you’ll enjoy!

Interesting fact: The taste of the same peppermint variety can differ depending on the soil it was grown in. Also, peppermint tea grown in the fertile soil of an organic field is tastier and healthier than mass-produced ones from herbicide-treated fields.

    Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

One of the biggest differences between spearmint and peppermint tea is that peppermint is rich in menthol. As you already know, menthol is responsible for the much-praised health benefits of peppermint tea, as well as its characteristic strong, zesty taste and aroma.

You can recognize the quality of Ly’s Garden Peppermint tea and its proudly high menthol content by how it makes your mouth tingle. The same variety of peppermint was also used in folk medicine by our ancestors.

Peppermint tea helps improve sleep quality, strengthens the immune system, relieves headaches and respiratory illnesses, and even enhances concentration.
